MYTH: Insulin tablet/pill can be taken orally for diabetes treatment.
FACT: Insulin can’t be given in tablet or pill form as the stomach would break it down and make it ineffective. Insulin is injected through the fat layer of the skin. It doesn’t go into muscle or directly into the blood. Absorption of insulin varies depending on where in the body it’s injected. The abdomen absorbs insulin the fastest and is used by most people. The upper arms, buttocks and thighs are also commonly used. While ways of taking insulin by mouth, or as a nasal spray are being developed, they are not readily available.
