How to inculcate the habit of self study in children

How to inculcate the habit of self study in children

How to inculcate the habit of self study in children! Many of you want to know how my boys study on their own. So here is a bit though not everything in detail.

1. I had to make up my mind to let go. Since I am a control freak I love to be aware of everything they did. I had to tell myself to let go. Letting go early is v important for their development. So you need to let go the need to hover in your child’s head all the time.

. 2. My mom was v happy when she saw my sons studying, eating, playing and fighting on their own. She said a v important thing. “When you were all young, I had no time nor did I know what to teach you all. So I would sit with you all. But that worked well with you as you learnt to study on your own. I see parents who sit and teach 2 to 3 hours daily but the kids are not at all serious.” . So the message is to let your kids study on their own.

They will make mistakes and they will falter. It’s ok. Let them do these mistakes when young. The stakes are low. The loss is small. So what they get less marks in class 2 or 5 or 7! Let them realize what is failure early on. They will understand how to do self study. And trust me, in this age of internet, the only reason I am sending my kids to school is because I want them to mingle around with 20 other kids and teachers. Socialize with them . Of course I need peace too.

. 3. I do not ever ask them what marks they have got. All I ask before assessment is a quick answer to my questions on how will you use this concept in real life. If they know great. Else I give them a bit of Gyan that is enough. After they come back from tests I don’t ask how much will they get. I ask them this ” So were the questions easy or tough?” If they say it was easy, I know they have understood everything v clearly. If they say it was tough, I know I need to explain it to them as they still have not understood the usage of what ever they learnt and hence it seemed tough to them. It also tells me that I did not explain to them good enough for their smarty heads. So I have to simplify the explanations.

4. I stopped packing their bags when they were in class 3. Their diary notes from teachers would be some thing like this “Mrs Madhurie Singh, your son did not bring his homework book today. Kindly ensure it is there.” My reply would be this ” Dear teacher, I am teaching him to be responsible. So it is his responsibility to pack all books not mine. Kindly scold him for not getting the book from next time.” Most teachers have written back this ” Dear Mrs Singh, I appreciate your way of inculcating responsibilities in your son. I will not bother you again for this. Hope more mothers are like you.” And this message is universal!

5. Project work and home assignments are all done by my sons on their own. Initially they would argue with me. ” All my classmates moms help them in their project s and homework. They are neater and look so good. But mine is dirtiest. Continue reading

WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER OPT FOR A C-SECTION (AND THE DANGERS OF HAVING ONE)

Share

C-Sections vs normal deliveryMany women are in favor of C-Sections these days. The statistics are showing that many women have either gotten one or will get one in the future. In the period between 1996 and 2009 C-Sections increased by 60%, but for the first time after many years, the cesarean deliveries have leveled and didn’t increase.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), a non-profit women’s health care advocacy group was credited for the curbing of the upward trend. Back in 2009, the group released the public health campaign in order to divert the physicians and expecting mothers from implementing unneeded c-sections.

C-Sections are not that safe as you think and they can be riskier than the traditional vaginal births. During this method you are vulnerable to bacteria which rapidly raise your risk of being affected by an infection. It can also contribute to excessive bleeding, blood lumps and even death.

It is also exhausting process for your body. The body needs one or two weeks for recovery after the traditional vaginal birth, while the c-section recovery can last more than a month. But, what is more important is that the c-section can cause complications in your future pregnancies. According to the latest research conducted by the ACOG, women with a cesarean delivery have a higher risk of placenta implantation issues, uterine rupture, bladder and bowel injuries, a second cesarean delivery and the need for hysterectomy.

The statistics are showing that around 31% of the births in the USA in the period between 2009 and 2012 were cesarean deliveries. There isn’t any information how many of them were medically required, so it is assumed that 8% of them were avoidable.

Why They Became So Popular

It is known that cesarean deliveries come with the complications mentioned above…so what is the main reason for the rapid rise in the period between 1996 and 2009? One reason is that cesarean delivery lead to another cesarean delivery. If a woman already gave birth via cesarean, giving birth to a second child in the traditional vaginal way is riskier. Doctors are very careful when it comes to risky procedures, both out of fear of hurting the mother, and out of fear of lawsuits. The journal Obstetrics and Gynecology released a study which showed that 29% of obstetrician college members noted that they did more cesareans in order to avoid any problems with the law.

Another cause is convenience- for both the mother and the doctor. Women often decide to have c-sections scheduled when their family is around in order to assist them in the first several days. The statistics are showing that the c-sections are usually implemented on Fridays in the period between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. What you need to know is that some doctors recommend inducing labor in order to avoid spending their nights and weekends waiting for the baby to come.

When a C-Section is Your Best Bet

There are some cases when the cesarean delivery is required in order to be avoided any complications that may affect the health of the mother or the baby. This decision is made by you and your doctor. The ACOG notes that you are a true candidate for c-section if:

  • You are carrying twins and they’re small or improperly positioned
  • You don’t have strong contractions and your baby couldn’t be moved
  • The umbilical cord is depleted or compressed
  • The baby suffers from an abnormal heart rate
  • There is a problem with the placenta
  • The baby is too big or breech
  • You are infected with an STI that could infect your baby
  • You are a diabetic patient, which can result with bigger baby
  • You suffer from increased blood pressure, which can result with preeclamsia, a dangerous condition that can harm your organs and can be only healed by childbirth (which is why an early-term c-section may be required)

The Bottom Line

Macrones recommends that you should have a vaginal birth if you can. With this method of birth, you will recover quicker and you will experience lower rate of infection. So, keep in mind that you should consult with your doctor if you can give birth vaginally before any decisions about the c-section. Be careful with the doctors who recommend c-section- particularly if you are young and don’t have any health problems.

The Bottom Line If you can have a vaginal birth safely, you should, says Macrones. When you give birth the natural way, you face a lower rate of infection and will experience a faster recovery—so you can hit the ground running as a new mom. So before you sign off on a c-section, you should ask your doctor if you can give birth vaginally. Be wary of doctors who encourage c-sections right off the bat—especially if you’re young and relatively healthy.

How to Relieve Your Sinus Infection in 20 Seconds

Share

How to Relieve Your Sinus Infection, home remedyA tongue and a thumb is everything you need to clear your sinuses in less than 20 seconds.

What Causes Nasal Congestion
Sinus infection and colds are common cause for a stuffy nose. When sinus cavities get inflamed due to infections, bacteria or viruses, the nasal passages get blocked up, making it hard for you to breathe.
Usually, nasal congestion clears up within a week, but you can solve this problem much earlier with this remedy.
How to Clear Your Sinuses in 20 Seconds
Just follow these simple steps:
1. Push your tongue against the top of your mouth and place your thumb between eyebrows.
2. Apply pressure with your thumb for 20 seconds. Your sinuses will begin to drain.
What Is the Science Behind This
A vomer bone is a bone that runs through your nasal passages to your mouth. Lisa DeStefano, D.O., an assistant professor at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, says that this technique can help the vomer bone to go back and forth. The back and forth motion loosens congestion, allowing your sinuses to drain.

Four Additional DIY Remedies for Nasal Congestion
If the previously mentioned technique doesn`t help, you can find the solution at your home. The following four natural remedies can help you cure your nasal congestion.
  1. Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
Mix eight ounces of warm water with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of honey, or you can take one tablespoon apple cider vinegar three times per day. This will help your sinuses to clear up in just a few days.
Also, you can mix half a cup of apple cider vinegar with half a cup of water, heat it on the stove, and inhale the steam with closed mouth and eyes.
  2. Turmeric
Turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory properties due to curcumrin. Just sprinkle some turmeric on your next meal to treat your nasal inflammation.
  3. Nasal Saline Rinse
This is not very comfortable solution because the rinse gets poured through one nostril and out the other to clear the sinuses. However, many people rely on a saline rinse to unblock their sinuses. The mixture consists of a quarter teaspoon of sea salt/pickling salt with one cup of warm water.
Note: If this is your first time in trying a saline rinse, ask someone for assistance and read and follow the instructions on the package very carefully.
  4. Oregano Oil
It is a little bit difficult to find it and a bit expensive as well. But, if you can reach it, simply ingest it, or steam it over the stove and inhale it to clear up your sinuses effectively.
